Where's a good druid when you need one? In Kevin Hearne's latest Iron Druid novel, Staked, Atticus O'Sullivan gets on the bad side of a bunch of vampires. That's bad news for Atticus, but at least he's got magic powers. The same can't be said for a hapless bunch of New Zealanders living on the nation's North Island. Over the course of just a few days, there's been several serious injuries from human bites and the locals can't help but to compare them to the predations of hungry vampires. In the first case, a man had to be taken to the hospital after a woman bit him so hard on the neck that she sliced through an artery. In the second, a group of women got into a fight at a night club and one of them nearly bit another's ear lobe off. In yet another case, a person was bitten during a domestic dispute. None of the attacks are related—that we know of. I'd say that if they are, we might want to see if someone can get Atticus on the case at once.
